The sum of $4,500 inserted for draining swamps at Shaukiwan will complete the scheme for the drainage of the valley below and to the west of the Sywan Barracks.

Miscellaneous.

The small increases of $500 and $700 respectively in the estimates for Sextons' Quarters at Mount Caroline and Kailungwan Cemeteries, are required to cover excesses on the contracts. Pro- -vision is made for the installation of electric fans and tele- -phones in several of the Government Schools and for the con- -struction of a strong room and erection of certain necessary fit- -tings in the Temporary Office set apart for the Government Opium Monopoly.

Waterworks.

The excess of $45,000 on the revised estimate for the Second Section of Tytam Tuk approved in your Confidential Despatch of 7th. August is accounted for by the sudden rise in the cost of home supplies. The preliminary excavation work for the dam is necessarily slow but it is expected that good progress will be made next year and that the whole of the provision of $540,000 will be expended.

Drainage.

A sum of 89,000 is inserted for the training of nullahs

in King's Park, where a considerable area of ground is rendered un- -fit for use on account of its swampy condition.

Miscellaneous .

A sum of $500,000 has been appropriated for the Typhoon

Refuge. Good progress is being made with this work and it is

expected that its completion will be effected within contract time.

I may mention that the mole was of sufficient height to afford

protection to a large number of native craft during the severe ty-

-phoon which occurred in August. The reduction in the estimate
